The naming of my Exeter classmate Jay Rockefeller as among those questioning Barack’s nomination of Leon Panetta to the CIA is laughable, since I can testify from memory that Jay was wrong in his 2004 prediction to his classmates (at our reunion) that neither of that summer’s party Conventions would survive some sort of attack. I sensed the paranoia of the informed then and have since thought ill of the entire culture of secrecy and exaggerated fears.
Sorry Jay.
Leon Panetta will be an ideal CIA Director. He will put the proper fear of God into those who have been in lockstep with the wisdom of covert actions and undercover violations of the Constitution. He will report to Barack, not the ghosts of the Dulles Brothers.
And we mayl gradually move toward a world where terrorism is treated as a police problem and a matter of education and huiman development and not as a karma contest designed to make nobody safe.
