Anomalies of self-sufficiency

Even Critics of Safety Net Increasingly Depend on It – NYTimes.com: “There is little poverty here in Chisago County, northeast of Minneapolis, where cheap housing for commuters is gradually replacing farmland. But Mr. Gulbranson and many other residents who describe themselves as self-sufficient members of the American middle class and as opponents of government largess are drawing more deeply on that government with each passing year.”

It is probably resentment of this dependency that fuels anger among the recipients of aid. To attack it otherwise courts more anger. A simple acknowledgment of the many ways self-sufficiency and governance are in harmony will show that even the vaunted corporations that trumpet self-sufficiency depend more on government than do the poorest of the poor. The reform of society will not ride on an either or but on the mix of things needed and the scale of how things are distributed and the way things are moved.
