My personal statement about psychosynthesis is meant to serve as a brief introduction to a field that I feel is key to an integration of a two centuries of psychology and psychoanalysis into a practical mode of understanding for now and the future.
This understanding assumes that the person or self is a spectrum and that such divinity as may exist in us is part of that spectrum, along with the primal elements of the self that we tend to wish to suppress.
Psychosynthesis also assumes, I believe, that the spectrum of selfhood is reachable by means of the imagination and reason and a method of probing based on the creation and evocation of subpersonalities.
In the simplest of terms, I might have the following subpersonalities:
A deprived and angry and resentful little boy.
A manic and dreaming and impulsive writer wannabe.
A shy and retiring meditative sort.
In a typical session I might create a dialog among these three. The little boy might wish some of the wannabe’s confidence. The wannabe might admit to some resentments. There might be a contribution from the meditative side. In essence, there would be trade-offs from each element that would create a more integrated and sensible approach to things.
Here I wish to supplement my own observations with links to other resources on Psychosynthesis. But with a personal caveat. I do not endorse any individual practitioners of this therapy. The range of therapists is large and I tend to favor those who do not append a body of new age understanding to what is otherwise a reasonable approach to people’s problems. That said, here are some links I believe will prove useful.
