A Choice Not an Echo 2008

About | Popular | Superdelegates | Predictions | Polls | Game

A choice not an echo is a familiar phrase in US politics and it applies with great pertinence to the present Clinton-Obama contest. But there are some subtleties.

Witness.

Clinton and McCain both think they can win votes by suspending the gas tax for the summer. Obama opposes this, on the grounds that it is a small savings that penalizes the highway program and thus those who might earn money building roads.

A small matter, but it opens the door to the following question.

A choice, not an echo? Doesn’t this translate into, If you do not want Obama, why do we need Clinton when we already have McCain?

Obama is running against two persons who shadow each other in the way they would govern.

Democrats who want a true choice and not an echo should vote for Barack.

The appropriate PS is — Isn’t Obama a conservative in many respects. Indeed he is, but this also distinguishes him from McCain and Clinton. He actually believes in principles of personal responsibility and paying as you go. All will be revealed in time.

Obama The Intrepid

About | Popular | Superdelegates | Predictions | Polls | Game

What a wonderful word intrepid is. If it has not already been applied to the Obama campaign, it should be. It means, according to Wordnet, “audacious: invulnerable to fear or intimidation; ‘audacious explorers’.”

How apposite! Here we have the almost comical display of Reverend Wright, almost a fantasy moment of self-vindication turned nostalgic, opposed to the utterly intrepid performance of the Obama campaign.

While the media goes bananas and the talking heads threaten to implode with pent-up convictions, Barack calmly addresses rallies in North Carolina and we — those of us who share the intrepid label — calmly evaluate the reality behind the show.

Here are a few insights that come from Lake Intrepid.

1. Cable TV is a parlous show. Parlous is a somewhat modified synonym for dangerous. That is why it bothers us. There is danger in allowing a commercial venture that looks somewhat like what we associate with reporting and journalism to have a grip on our consciousness. We confuse its gyrations with reality. We become viscerally related to this or that nuance from this or that figure on the screen. It is no wonder that we intrepid find we no longer need to watch, that we increasingly work in silence and allow our minds to begin to sort the significant from the ephemeral. At which point we conclude that we have ceded too much power to a largely incestuous body of entertainers, comparatively low paid when you consider what big stars get when they do movies, what marquee athletes get. And we conclude something far more important — the vast preponderance of human beings have better things to do than saturate themselves with the day’s MSM mantra. Cable TV is parlous but not terminally harmful.

2. Intrepid thinks things through. Yes, all. Obama thought through whether to run. The damnably admirable thing about this campaign is how consistent it has been. It has made audacity look like business as usual. Which explains the frantic gyrations of the Clinton campaign, confronted at every turn by little reminders of how all that forethought is playing out. Why do you suppose that Barack Obama now has more endorsements from Senators than Hillary Clinton has? It is because they see through the screen of daily Cable mantras — not even solid enough to wrap fish in — and cut to the little things that happen because of what the campaign set in motion a year and more ago. They see how the little things add up to massive strength economically, massive solidity once this contest is concluded, massive results for the world once election is achieved.

3. Intrepid is serious. When Barack paces back and forth, allowing his inner thinking to become transparent to those who are attending, he is talking about life and death issues because, contrary to his opponent, he is offering no escape. When we listen to the politicians of gridlock we are essentially being told that our lives are not going to be bothered by real changes. Who really wants change? Well, the problem is that we are reaching one of those turning points in human evolution. Either we change or what we have gained by courage and steadfast defense of ideas of freedom and justice begins to seep away and the world moves further into decline. Intrepid is acting on a trust in the willingness of a time and its generations to grasp realities that seemed beyond us.

That we could move beyond the oil economy.

That we could move to new concepts of human settlements.

That we could begin to actually achieve some of the elementary goals for the reduction of poverty, disease and assaults on elementary rights and freedoms.

Intrepid is the Obama campaign being for real, not a chimera or a phony.

When we consider what is at stake we begin to comprehend on a deeper level just how real and truthful Obama is being when he evokes the audacity of hope.

And we begin to see that, even if we quail at the thought of a Wright who is flying off at the handle, or a Chris Matthews who is indulging some ambient enthusiasm-of-the day, we are blessed (baracked) with something special, an intrepid thing, an operation that is more real, and closer to realization, than we ever dreamed possible.

And, for this, we who are older, who know the Jonah mentality that Wright participates in, yelling out things that both true and outmoded at the same time, should be thankful. We can say yes to both Wright and Obama. And still be intrepid, eyes on the prize.

Obama Hits Bread & Butter Issues

About | Popular | Superdelegates | Predictions | Polls | Game

The contest is over on the Democratic side. The illusion that it is not over is shared by people on the right and Clinton folk who have reasons to stretch this out forever, as if anything more could be thrown at Obama and made to stick. Meanwhile, Barack Obama is running daily against the spectral, disembodied monotone voice of John McCain. And as the video below demonstrates, he has switched from what some saw as pie in the sky to serious bread and butter. He is talking to people on the issues that speak to them. They already know he can do the reconciling thing. They already know he can organize better than anyone around. So it remains to remind them to vote for him or suffer either the lash of Clinton or the wet towel of McCain.

Listen up.

And, of course, our objective and fair media, who are carrying the illusion forward, want nothing more than to promote their political creds while hashing over the same issues day after day. If these people spend any time actually reporting it is not very obvious. Do they know what Mayor Daley says about Bill Ayers? Do they dwell on Sean Hannity’s feeding of the Ayers issue to the willing Stephanopoulos? Do they delve into why Bill Clinton has consistently made mega-errors? Did they prove to their satisfaction that Hillary Clinton raised 10 million campaign dollars in the days following PA?

Senator Jeff Bingaman Endorses Barack Obama

About | Popular | Superdelegates | Predictions | Polls | Game

Chicago, IL – Today, United States Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) endorsed Barack Obama for president, citing his ability to rise above the issues that divide us, end the war in Iraq, bring universal health care, and make America energy independent.

Senator Bingaman said, “Today, I am announcing my support for Barack Obama for president and declaring my intention to vote for him at the Democratic convention.

“Our nation faces a daunting number of critical challenges: reasserting America’s leadership in the world, meeting our needs for energy independence, addressing global warming, making healthcare accessible and affordable, positioning our economy to effectively compete globally, and extricating ourselves from the war in Iraq, to name a few.

“To make progress, we must rise above the partisanship and the issues that divide us to find common ground. We must move the country in a dramatically new direction.

“I strongly believe Barack Obama is best positioned to lead the nation in that new direction.”

Senator Obama said, “I’m grateful today to have Senator Bingaman’s support. Senator Bingaman has been speaking out in the United States Senate on some of the most pressing issues of our time – saving our environment, fighting global warming, and making America energy independent. Senator Bingaman has been an important advocate in the energy debate, and has served the people of New Mexico for decades, giving voice to the issues that matter to families across the state. We are proud to have his support as we fight to bring about real change for families in New Mexico and across the country.”

Senator Jeff Bingaman is the Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He has served in the United State Senate since 1982, and previously served as New Mexico Attorney General.

PPP Calls NC Closer

About | Popular | Superdelegates | Predictions | Polls | Game

Public Policy Polling stumbled a week ago, calling Pennsylvania for Barack. Now, in North Carolina, PPP calls the race getting closer. My suspicion is that things ARE getting closer and that white voters are waking up to their actual feelings about having an African American President. If this is so, we need to face it. It’s not racism, for the most part. It’s what we might call preference politics at work.

My guess is that people may be concluding that an Obama Presidency might slice the economic pie to disadvantage whites. Before you throw up your hands, hold that thought and ask, If this is true, how can Barack counter preference politics effectively?

Drive the unity message home in specific terms.

Show that fears of being hit with a preferential agenda are completely unfounded.

Face the issue head on.

Deliver a big Barack NO to the very notion of preferential politics.

This is a preemptive approach that can work.

The full text of the Presidential part of the PPP poll is posted below.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 28, 2008

INTERVIEWS: DEAN DEBNAM 888-621-6988 / 919-880-4888

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE POLL: TOM JENSEN 919-744-6312

Presidential race narrows in NC

Raleigh, N.C. – Hillary Clinton has cut Barack Obama’s North Carolina lead in half,
according to the newest survey from Public Policy Polling.

Obama still has a solid 51-39 advantage over Clinton in the state, but his lead had ranged from 18-25 points in PPP’s previous five North Carolina polls.

The bulk of the movement in the race over the last week has come from white voters.

The survey last week showed Obama pulling to within five points of Clinton with that
group, but her lead now is back up at 56-35.

“Barack Obama is certainly still the run away favorite in North Carolina,” said Dean
Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “But she’s made some inroads since
Pennsylvania and the race could end up being closer than might have been expected.”

In the Democratic race for Governor Bev Perdue has built her lead up to 14 points, 47-33.

Although opponent Richard Moore spent a lot of energy and money last week trying to
erode her credibility with black voters, Perdue continues to hold a 56-27 lead with that group.

Kay Hagan is maintaining a nearly insurmountable lead in the US Senate race. She now
leads her main opponent, Jim Neal, by a margin of 36-8.

PPP surveyed 1,121 likely Democratic primary voters on April 26th and 27th. The
survey’s margin of error is +/- 2.9%. Other factors, such as refusal to be interviewed and weighting, may introduce additional error that is more difficult to quantify.

Complete results are attached and can be found at www.publicpolicypolling.com.

Rev. Wright Detroit NAACP Speech

About | Popular | Superdelegates | Predictions | Polls | Game

Jeremiah Wright is a pastor who is cultivated, humorous, highly intelligent and willing to react to his “crucifixion” by the MSM (Main Stream Media) in a fair and balanced way, if I may coin a phrase. Sadly his Detroit NAACP speech will be spun beyond recognition by those whose world runs on FOX-derived sound snippets. Those who have grown beyond this false and nefarious perception will see Wright’s serious presentation of an evolution of tolerance in the four videos below. Those who have not remain in need of forgiveness and instruction.

PLEASE NOTE: Heavy traffic may mean you cannot connect to some of the below. If so, please bookmark and return another time. Thank you.

And from Sandra on the Obama Blog

Lincoln’s Version of “When The Chickens Came Home To Roost”

The Almighty has His own purposes. ‘Woe unto the world because of offenses; for it must needs be that offenses come, but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh.’ If we shall suppose that American slavery is one of those offenses which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which, having continued through His appointed time, He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South this terrible war as the woe due to those by whom the offense came, shall we discern therein any departure from those divine attributes which the believers in a living God always ascribe to Him? Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said three thousand years ago, so still it must be said ‘the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

Second Inaugural

About the speech Lincoln said, “… I believe it is not immediately popular. Men are not flattered by being shown that there has been a difference of purpose between the Almighty and them.”

Take heart Rev.Wright. You are in good company!

How Jeremiah Wright Helps Obama Campaign

About | Popular | Superdelegates | Predictions | Polls | Game

There is an old saw in media circles: All publicity is valuable. Including bad publicity. The sum of Jeremiah Wright’s statements are an amalgam of largely unfamiliar, but cogent, Black Liberation Theology and the implicit result of Black Liberation Theology: The implications of the prophetic Biblical message for the world. This is where things necessarily get political. Just as politics infuses the pages of the Bible.

And when all is said and done, Barack Obama’s campaign will be helped by this unprecedented dynamic.

Yes, when all is said and done, the hypocrisy of a nation sending its young to war while both President and Vice President have casually avoided any military service, will register with ordinary voters.

And when all is said and done, Barack having an opportunity to “explain” whenever he likes is an open invitation to preempt the media, even the hostile media. Barack on FOX. Who wins in this scenario? Barack, with ordinary voters.

Barack on FOX Yesterday

And when all is said and done, the more ordinary voters in the US who finally realize, as they will by November, that Wright was taken completely out of context by FOX and their sermon snippets, the better. The media stand to be the major losers in this season of their denouement as superficial, lazy and, in the case of FOX, hyper-propagandistic.

+

Everything the Clinton campaign appears to be doing now has to do with tinkering with the rules of this campaign. Not a headline grabber.

Wright on TV pushes everything else off. It is the MEDIA projecting its own guilt at having been led by the nose by FOX that is making every Wright speech a matter for wall to wall coverage.

What this is creating is massive TIREDNESS, not massive HATRED for Obama.

Wright is out there defending himself and doing his thing. The media can follow him or not. It is funny. One almost believes that God is smiling in the shadows.

The Republicans are smart enough to play what will work for them. The Wright stuff will soon prove worthless for purposes of attacking Obama. So will tarring Obama as a leftist.

What will the Republicans do, after all the Wright stuff, when Susan Eisenhower and Julie Nixon look into the cameras and with a few stares humbles all Republican efforts to suppress everything that John McCain actually stands for?

+

I still favor Obama fireside chats and I am joined today by the sage David Gergen who is proposing exactly the same thing. I have no doubt that Obama will respond and that the story will become, Hey, look Obama is IGNORING this, MOVING BEYOND IT, er, um. Duh.

+

Wright helps Barack because he says things that are true that Obama cannot say. This allows Obama the chance to define himself better with the American people. There has been NOTHING like this dynamic in our politics. It is a means to a more perfect union, a more tolerant society, a more mature nation.

It is also a basis for saying, Lighten up. No one is perfect. Something Jeremiah and Barack would ascribe to.
