I believe John McCain is a genuine security risk. But it is not merely because of his documented temper tantrums. It is because he is, in Lieberman’s words, a “controlled” person. That implies a simmering and volatile and uneven nature.
This post consists of sourced documentation of McCain temper difficulties.
There are many stories that refer to McCain’s temper as volcanic without offering a scintilla of evidemce. Such actual evidences as I have been able to find are posted below in blockquotes with specific sources attached.
FROM JOHN MCCAIN: “My temper has often been both a matter of public speculation and personal concern,” McCain wrote. “I have a temper, to state the obvious, which I have tried to control with varying degrees of success because it does not always serve my interest or the public’s. I have regretted losing my temper on many occasions. But there are things worth getting angry about in politics, and I have at times tried to use my anger to incite public outrage. I make no apologies for that. . . . When public servants lose their capacity for outrage over practices injurious to the national interest, they have outlived their usefulness to the country.” SOURCE This source notes mainly losses of temper resulting in shouted obscenities, often at close range. Lieberman is quoted as saying McCain is a very “controlled” person.

More indication of an emotional issue that is not simply temper. More like a fighting temperament. And an admission that his temper may have grown worse. SOURCE
MCCAIN-DOMENICI INCIDENT AND AFTERMATH:
Sen. McCain Repeatedly Called Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) An “A**hole”, Causing A Fellow GOP Senator To Say, “I Didn’t Want This Guy Anywhere Near A Trigger.” “Why can’t McCain win the votes of his own colleagues? To explain, a Republican senator tells this story: at a GOP meeting last fall, McCain erupted out of the blue at the respected Budget Committee chairman, Pete Domenici, saying, ‘Only an a–hole would put together a budget like this.’ Offended, Domenici stood up and gave a dignified, restrained speech about how in all his years in the Senate, through many heated debates, no one had ever called him that. Another senator might have taken the moment to check his temper. But McCain went on: ‘I wouldn’t call you an a–hole unless you really were an a–hole.’ The Republican senator witnessing the scene had considered supporting McCain for president, but changed his mind. ‘I decided,’ the senator told Newsweek, ‘I didn’t want this guy anywhere near a trigger.’” (Evan Thomas, et al., “Senator Hothead,” Newsweek, 2/21/00) SOURCE This “conservative” page offers ten incidents which it says demonstrated McCain’s temper problem.
BLOWING UP AT CINDY MCCAIN IS ALLEGED:
Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain’s intemperance. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain’s hair and said, “You’re getting a little thin up there.” McCain’s face reddened, and he responded, “At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt.” McCain’s excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days. SOURCE
ADDED: MCCAIN POW/MIA ASSAULT ALLEGED
When he [McCain] realized who we were, his face turned red and he became enraged. He would not accept the letters we had brought, he burst through our group assaulting the niece of Jane Duke Gaylor, mother of a MIA. I followed Senator McCain down the hall asking that he leave the legislation alone and all the while he is denying that he knew anything about the Missing Personnel Act. …As we reached the elevator he said to me that I didn’t know what he had been through … I then stated I understood what he had been through and David Hrdlicka was still going through it. I had the capture picture of my husband and tried to show the picture to him but he would not look at it. …The elevator arrived and Senator McCain quickly jumped in — that ended our conversation. After this incident we went to the Capitol Police and filed a report. We also sent complaints to the ethics committee on the Senator’s behavior.
“He went from a smiling, congenial, happy face to a beet red, totally enraged face in an instant,” she said. “I have never seen a senator act in this way. We were all dumbfounded how this happened. He threw his arm up, and she goes flying and Jane [who was in a wheelchair] gets pushed aside as he brushes by her. All I see is people flying and I’m behind him [McCain]… This was assault.” SOURCE Hat Tip to yesterday gone (Obama Blog)
I shall add to this page as seems warrranted. To me the most alarming thing here is not the documented blow-ups, but the Lieberman admission that John McCain is a “controlled” person. There is enough indication of McCain’s foreign policy and military presuppositions to suggest to me that he would be quick on the trigger when that facade of control was disturbed by provocation. This would make him the last person in the world we would want controlling our destiny in the event of any terrorist provocations anywhere in the world.
I feel McCain is a genuine security risk.
