Sooner or later, a pundit (talking head) moves from reasonable analysis to complete idiocy. Since the MSM universe is forgiving, these idiot moments are generally passed over.
But Dana Milbank is one of the smiling faces on Keith Olbermann, playing the semi-wise guy with this and that bit of repartee.
This Washington Post column in which he refers to Barack as President Obama is a more serious aberration than when Bob Herbert throws a fit about Obama. It is a harmful abdication of journalistic responsibility.
Millbank’s column not far removed from the latest McCain ad, which attaches outright lies to a montage which focuses on Obama’s celebrity.
You can find the offensive McCain video here.
Here is a chunk of the Milbank screed.
(Obama) traveled in a bubble more insulating than the actual president’s. Traffic was shut down for him as he zoomed about town in a long, presidential-style motorcade, while the public and most of the press were kept in the dark about his activities, which included a fundraiser at the Mayflower where donors paid $10,000 or more to have photos taken with him. His schedule for the day, announced Monday night, would have made Dick Cheney envious:
11:00 a.m.: En route TBA.
12:05 p.m.: En route TBA.
1:45 p.m.: En route TBA.
2:55 p.m.: En route TBA.
5:20 p.m.: En route TBA.
The 5:20 TBA turned out to be his adoration session with lawmakers in the Cannon Caucus Room, where even committee chairmen arrived early, as if for the State of the Union. Capitol Police cleared the halls — just as they do for the actual president. The Secret Service hustled him in through a side door — just as they do for the actual president.
Inside, according to a witness, he told the House members, “This is the moment . . . that the world is waiting for,” adding: “I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions.”
Milbank’s witness did NOT tell him the whole context, so Dana has joined Mayhill Fowler in transgressing rules of journalism in order to rush out with an account which is damaging if not understood in context.
Barack’s “I have become a symbol” was preceded by a general statement about the world waiting for an indication that our country is embarking on a new course.
Here is what Milbank ignored reported by Greg Sargent
“His entire point of that riff was that the campaign IS NOT about him. The Post left out the important first half of the sentence, which was something along the lines of: ‘It has become increasingly clear in my travel, the campaign, that the crowds, the enthusiasm, 200,000 people in Berlin, is not about me at all. It’s about America. I have just become a symbol … .”
By faulting Obama for using what looks like excessive protection, Milbank is simply not acknowledging reality. Nowhere more than in Europe is the assumption more rife that Barack is in danger. There is material on the Obama blog today about a supporter in Virginia who is experiencing hate activity directed at Obama campaign signs.
Milbank has falllen into the McCain mindset. It is beneath him in the same way people like Hagel find McCain’s current behavior beneath him.
I imagine this blog it too low on the totem pole to warrant a read from Dana. I can guarantee you I would have written the same thing were I blessed with a column in the Washington Post.
I hope Keith elicits from Milbank one of those sheepish achnowledgements that Milbank seems to specialize in. In the case of his current column, he is not merely out of line. He is misconstruing Barack seriously and doing him damage.
Here is an excellent and thoughtful look at all this.
