Bailout, McCain Show, Obama Rolls On — Building All Day

Huff | Obama Diary | TALKING POINTS UT| Comment Fodder | Palin UT

UT=Updated Today.

I will begin with my late night surmise of yesterday:

PREVIEW OF TOMORROW — I will probably keep an open page because my first thought is about what sort of drama McCain and Camp will do, now that defeat seems written in the latest polls. Bear in mind that McCain is gambling every step of the way. I am thinking he may vote against the bailout and make that the issue from now on. He would win the plaudits of the critics, but bear in mind that the critics are in many cases reluctant YESES.

It is somewhat possible, if he does vote for the settlement, that he will throw Palin under the bus. This would preempt the news cycle and her replacement by Lieberman would set off a new round of speculation, polling and punditry.

The only thing I am certain of is that vicious McCain attacks on Barack will be stepped up. Barack will be said to be a secret Muslim whose wife hates America and so forth and so on.

I hope the Obama forces are planning another warm and happy “we are normal” time before November 4.

Barack will have the high ground and be able to call anything the McCain campaign does drama, distraction or lies or all of the above.

Unless McCain is hiding, I believe we can expect more drama tomorrow.

Bailout, McCain Show, Obama Rolls On — Building All Day

Alright, let the day begin. Starting out with this via Andrew Sullivan, which explains why I feel more and more that McCain will vote NO, pitting widespread anger against the Obama change message, nativism against globalism, Pax Americana militarism against UN incremental progress.

“The decision to give the federal government the ability to nationalize almost every bad mortgage in America interrupts this basic truth of our free market economy. . . . Before you vote, ask yourself why you came here and vote with courage and integrity to those principals [sic]. If you came here because you believe in limited government and the freedom of the American marketplace, vote in accordance with those convictions,” – Mike Pence, Republican of Indiana. SOURCE

The Senate may not vote until Wednesday, which would give McCain two days to ramp up the drama.

I didn’t think of this, but the candidates might both skip the vote entirely.

While waiting:

Battle Hymn of Barack Obama

Yes, I watched his lonely protest standing up against the war
Then I heard his stirring challenge to bring change from shore to shore
I could see the people moving toward what he was fighting for
The change is marching on

I am voting for Obama
I am voting for Obama
I am voting for Obama
The change is marching on

Now the enemy is fearful and the stakes are rising high
Still he sounds the call for change and millions know the reason why
There’s a dream our nation’s built on and that dream can never die
The change is marching on

I am voting for Obama
I’am voting for Obama
I am voting for Obama
The change is marching on

When I cast my precious ballot I’ll be praying for the ones
Of the future generations, all whose time is not yet come
To remember this great moment when the people’s will was done
The change is marching on

I am voting for Obama
I am voting for Obama
I am voting for Obama
The change is marching on

12:33 PM

Watching Palin and McCain, I know that the serial lying is lost on normal people who do not follow the campaigns with an eagle eye. Is it having any effect on more than the folks in the Columbus audience? Sure. Anyone who believes them. I am turning it off on McCain’s — We need a President who will always tell American’s the truth.

1:37 PM Barack’s campaign says he’ll be back to vote for the bailout. Gingrich now says it is a crisis and he would reluctantly vote for the bailout. The vote is underway and the outcome is in doubt. If it does not pass I imagine the Dow will double its downward course which is now at 279 minus.

Dow just added another 100 to the minus total — whoops 200 — -467.

The vote may be frozen as there are now enough votes to defeat.

Now the market is down 653 and now going up a little. Now it’s 520. Now 498. Maybe this is a floor area.

Republicans are going to be blamed unless they turn it. The Stock Exchange is silently watching.

1:56 PM EASTERN

Market is minus 450. Congress is ten votes from passage with arm-twisting in progress and blame moving to Republicans if there is a defeat.

2:07 PM EASTERN

The bill has failed … for now.

2:21 PM EASTERN

Surreal, watching the run-up to a Colorado Barack rally with some hot music as a prelude. I imagine Barack somewhere in back getting the news. Ironically, this could be wht salts the entire election away for Barack. The music is celebratory. Around the world the markets are tumbling.

2:34 PM EASTERN

Republicans are blaming a Pelosi speech I missed for the failure to get the needed votes.

2:39 EASTERM

Barack speaking and calling for calm and to see that the package does get done. It’s gonna be rocky, like flying in to Denver.

3:04 PM EASTERN

Pelosi is giving it back and observing Democrats kept their bargain. The crisis has not gone away. Holds out some hope for another bite of the apple — meaning a bill. With a religious holiday tonight, this could go on past Wednesday.

I would not think today’s results do much if anything for McCain.

3:25 PM EASTERN

Dow is down 700. Democrats could have delivered but always said it had to be bipartisan.

McCain did not deign to make any statement.

4:42 PM EASTERN

It is statement and recrimination time. Here is the Huffington Post report with a VIDEO.

5:02 PM EASTERN

Well, I said McCain might reject the bailout and I wonder if, since clearly failing to help the passage of the plan, he may not quickly jump into the populist opposition. Expecially since Barack has made his strongest commitment yet to passage. If the crisis is only medium, opposition could look OK. David Sirota will be happy. But I have learned to wonder when both left and right agree on anything.
