Brian Schweitzer Watch

About | Huff | Obama Diary | TALKING POINTS | Way of Abba | Longevity

Welcome, my nail-biting, sleep-deprived Schweitzer fans and all other Obama folk and anyone else who happens by. Until something HAPPENS that rivets my attention more than getting the VEEP thing done, I will maintain this watch, updating as needed.

Meanwhile, do scroll down as I have a choice lot of links that will help you get up to speed.

On the matter at hand:

Even my old Brian Schweitzer for Veep friends are telling me. It’s Biden, they do not add dummy, but they do ask what I am smoking. When I say nothing, the conversation ends.

A few of the faithful write more hopefully.

Today we have word that Brian is embroiled in an elections dispute in Montana involving the effort to extract a fine of $750 for an ethics violation.

The issue is confused. A PSA on a radio station that his opponents say was a political campaign thing and Schweitzer says it was not, as it promoted Montana farming and such.

The whole story can be accessed on this local blog, which suggests that Brian should pay up. Higher ground.

To hear Schweitzer talking for 45 minutes just a few days ago, click here. And to see our original Schweitzer for Vice President Page, go here.

Well, the gloves are off now so it is time to turn to the fight. I will lock this baby down and proceed to a roundhouse McCain is the elitist page. Ciao.

Hear Brian Schweitzer LIVE Aug. 19 for 45 Minutes

About | Huff | Obama Diary | TALKING POINTS | Way of Abba | Longevity

This page is continually updating.

This is an easy post. Here is the link. Brian says why Montana zapped real ID. But there is more on his early life and general attitudes. And his being for Barack.

Barack goes to Billings next Tuesday — so we are told. [Or WERE told! Now I cannot access the story link –but it was there. I am listening to CNN and hearing nothing as apt as you will find, er, right here. I will leave the link in case it reactivates. Why was it taken down? Anyway, someone else agrees with me that Schweitzer could be the choice — and offers some more info on why. And here is at least a mention of Billings and Tuesday.]

Al Giordano suggested a week ago that Barack should announce veep next Wednesday.

How smart was that?

It may not happen and we will go on, as they say.

But it just might.

For more on Brian Schweitzer click here.

PS … The more I think about it, if this is even remotely correct, things will leak out more or less like this. No announcement tomorrow. BIG MSM story. It will be Saturday. No announcement Saturday. BIG MSM story. Sunday. Or. But by now it will have sunk in that Barack is going to Billings on Tuesday. Someone will reference Al’s piece of August 18.

Meanwhile the signups to hear the news will burgeon.

BUT — the media will all rush like lemmings to Montana. I can see Frank Zappa smiling in his grave. And gradually the Life of Brian will unfold, but since Brian is Brian they will have great trouble processing him. It will be a delight. And he will blow them off in one way or another. I can’t wait.

OK this is fiction. A fantasy. But isn’t it more interesting than another veep page filled with photos of the usual suspects?

LATER:

Biden had a family gathering at his home Thursday afternoon, with his wife Jill, niece Missy Owens and son Beau, Delaware’s attorney general coming and going past reporters staked outside. Biden ran errands, including a visit to the dentist, but didn’t speak to the media as he came and went.

Biden is a favorite for the vice presidential nomination among Democrats who think Obama could use his experience and tough campaign style. Biden has served 35 years in Congress, while Obama has served three. SOURCE

Still for Brian Schweitzer and a Note on McCain’s Problem

About | Huff | Obama Diary | TALKING POINTS | Way of Abba | Longevity

Brian Schweitzer has fallen off the radar. Even the person who first opened my eyes to his virtues as Barack’s possible running mate has suggested that the Obama nod will go to someone … boring, someone who will not have the capacity to deal with the most pressing problem, the big move on energy, to renewables, not just drill, drill, drill, nuke, nuke, nuke.

So a few of us, comparatively, KNOW that Brian could heat this sucker up. He could talk straight to Republicans. He could talk straight about the electorate. He could frame exactly what Barack is accused of being abstract about in unmistakably clear terms. He could keep everyone busy and no one would need to ask WHY.

That is how transparently clear it is that Schweitzer makes as much sense now as he did when I made this page and this page and this page.

AND NOW TO JOHN MCCAIN:

I am willing to bet that McCain wants Lieberman which is why his people are polling a choice veep candidate and finding out it will be a problem for him.

This should serve to isolate him more and more from the core of the GOP who have been pushing him to play so low these days. Since he may have a tiny trace of guilt and anger about this, the denial of his friend Lieberman will make him say, Wait, whose show is this?

Since he can now look at Barack and the Obama campaign and see nothing but a ratcheting up of attacks on him as worse than Bush, his anger will be increased.

It may result in a damn the torpedoes Lieberman choice in which case this will be more of the same — a referendum on Barack.

Our mission if we choose to accept it is to take the fight to McCain every which way, leaving no vulnerability personal or policy wise unexamined.

Will the McCain campaign denounce Corsi as a liar? Why not.

Will McCain play craps if he is elected? How can we be sure?

How can he be for veterans with his record of negative votes against vets?

How can he escape his early statements declaring cictory in the Iraq war, actually promoting the attack on Iraq from 9/11 on?

The gloves are off. The difference is that we will be stating the truth. McCain will need to continue the Big Lie effort.

Giordano Says Obama Should Wait Until NEXT Wednesday to Announce a Veep Choice

About | Huff | Obama Diary | TALKING POINTS | Way of Abba | Longevity

Al Giordano has the most civilized comment section I know of. Having disabled mine, I respect even more a person who attracts readers who will not troll or otherwise besmirch — a tendency I find at 538.com and many other spots. I think it may be because Al writes THOUGHTFUL posts, maybe one a day. Not to mention that he moderates the posts, but that is in itself no guarantee of quality.

Yesterday, Giordano made the point that any dent Barack could put in the evangelical corpus was a plus, while the rest of the blogosphere was obsessing on whether McCain heard and cheated on the Rick Warren questions or not.

And today, Giordano has suggested we wait all the way until next Wednesday night to hear Barack’s veep choice. Here is a sample of today’s message:

From the (nationally televised) stage on Monday and Tuesday nights of the convention, the phone number offer could be announced again and again, netting many more hundreds of thousands of people to link into the Obama text-messaging network and then receive their instant gratification on Wednesday – the day of the pick. (And, after all, which of those millions doesn’t get a secret thrill out of getting the confirmed news before the Great Mentioners and middlemen of the national media announce it?)

In fact, I can’t think of any really good reason to spill the beans before then. That move would simply suck the oxygen out from Clinton-centric or other “off message” speculation to gain traction or dominate the convention week narrative and would retain a real element of surprise and meaningful theater to the convention itself, upping viewership, and making the eventual choice seem bigger than life: the whole world waiting, together, to find out the news. SOURCE

There is more and I urge you to read the whole post.

Since I continue to hope the choice will be Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, I have to admit that the likelihood of this being the scenario for his unveiling seems a far stretch. The argument that it would need to be someone who would excite everyone instantly and universally — GORE — is also a stretch. I am perplexed.

The one thing I am not perplexed about is the fact that I feel Schweitzer’s VOICE is badly needed. The convention cannot be a coronation. It needs to be an ADVANCE. And the advance requires conviction to play to all Americans.

We are at a crucial moment with everything tied, and therefore everything in a knot. Even Nate over at 538.com is saying that things have changed.

We may come out of Denver an underdog.

Barack needs to go out like he came in, back in Springfield. A LONG SHOT with a serious vision. It needs to be recovered and fleshed out.

Yes, I know about all the underpinning structure of offices and organizers and so forth. And I know Barack wants us all to relax and be cool.

But I am worried about more than the Republican attack machine. I am worried about five words that a person can use to say why he or she prefers Obama to McCain.

So, whatever happens, I am like the singer in Every Step You Take. I’ll be watching you.

Speaking of Watching You, FOX Has An Inadvertent Moment of Fair and Balanced Input

It Will Be Sebelius or Schweitzer, Not Biden, Bayh or Kaine

The MSM 3 are Biden (Keith’s choice), Bayh and Kaine, in that order sort of. All are wrong choices.

The two most likely choices are Kathleen Sebelius and Brian Schweitzer, the Governors of Kansas and Montana respectively. Both have seismic potential.

The scenario under which Sebelius might get the nod is that it would be part of the rapprochement Clinton might go with. Hillary and Kathleen suddenly become the SAME THING and Hilary’s supporters back off.

Schweitzer would be Obama’s laugh at everyone, a manifestation of great confidence and the choice of someone who really does rank as a political original and potential leader beyond the others in the Barack VEEP stable.

These two candidates speak chance and excitement and none of the MSM three promise more but endless picking over of the boring question WHY.

I think the choice of one of these would force McCain to choose Lieberman and run on a Strangelove platform. All the neocon apocalypse you can imbibe. Talk about cool aid.

Schweitzer would also nail down what is already an obvious Western Strategy. All you need to do is count the Western states that Obama regards as among the battlegrounds where he is placing his most recent ad.

The states are AK, CO, FL, IA, MI, MO, MT, NM, NV, NH, NC, ND, OH, PA, VA, and WI.

Now if it came down to Schweitzer or Sebelius, what would the info just above tell you. NO KANSAS. Kansas is McCain’s as of now.

Schweitzer is a THINKER who has put together the restoration economy for this whole country.

Schweitzer, Not Kaine

About | Huff | Obama Diary | Rose World News | Way of Abba | Longevity

Can a lonely blog cut ice with a campaign that is increasingly moving into insular mode? Not as insular as the norm, mind you, but insular to efforts to have a say from a lonely perch.

Nonetheless, words are important. They are said to have existed simultaneously with the deity. So here goes.

Tim Kaine is given high enough marks by people who know him, but almost universally the same people say this popular Virginian should not move.

Kaine’s extraction from Virginia would have such a negative political effect that it would be viewed as a negative action and a political decision lacking in serious smarts.

A second reason is that Kaine would be a fine veep but is not successor material. This is more debatable than the first point.

Do not befoul Virginia politics with a Kaine choice.

Aside from a few encounters on the record, I have no idea whether Barack Obama has communed with the irascible Brian Schweitzer, whether the men disliked each other on the spot, or what. I do know that Brian would probably rattle the cages of Caroline Kennedy and Eric Holder. I do know Brian is not on any pundit’s short list.

But my strong counsel is to consider Schweitzer over Kaine. You can win VA without Kaine as veep. You can win Montana and two or three other Western states with Schweitzer holding down the slot

Type Brian Schweitzer into the Blog Search for this site and you will find more reasons. I have even managed to get my Western Strategy thoughts over on Huff Post.

The main reason I am doing this post is on the off chance that it will float beneath the noses of the established folk in the campaign.

This campaign is already DIRTY. John McCain has made a pact with the very jaws of hell and the jaws are working overtime to refine Republican Big Lie tricks that have worked for twenty years to prevent this country from making the progress it needs to overcome deep structural flaws which are creating more than two societies (Kerner) but the possibility of a decline from being a democracy and a reputable leader among nations.

To combat this lethal force we need more than Barack’s high bar. We need a person who can bring a Mark Twain sensibility and a Will Rogers flair to the political arena and DISSECT what the Republicans are doing so that even an NRA junkie or an Appalachian racist will see the point.

This is the kind of mentality that has won Schweitzer an 80 percent popularity rating in RED Montana.

Schweitzer is an OUTSIDER who squares with Barack on the essentials and is independent enough to say he had to DECIDE on Obama. His choice of Obama was NOT automatic.

If Barack is to defeat the GOP juggernaut, he will need the votes of those who DECIDED and whose choice was NOT automatic.

If anyone is paying attention, send me an email that says Amen. I do not do comments on this blog. Too many trolls.

Barack Needs Brian Schweitzer NOW

About | Obama Vs. McCain | 538.com | Budget Hero | Fact Check

I would love to be guarding against overconfidence. The polls are favoring Barack a bit more. But there is something bothering me. One minor thing. One major thing. The minor thing is the work in progress business. The major thing is getting the message right. And I mean correct, on target, effective, zinging. WINNING.

Alright, let me take each of these issues.

1. Overconfidence.

Why not? It is a Democratic year. I’ll tell you why. It could be a Democratic year and our divided electorate could just figure that we do not want THAT Democratic a year and put McCain in as a BRAKE on Democratic excess. This would be accompanied by a campaign that had Barack so involved in answering charges that the message would get lost in the counter-punching.

Worst case? Maybe. But the electorate is not that dumb. Unless we have an image of Barack that makes serious sense to a clear majority, McCain will benefit from exactly what people went for with Clinton. Whatever they say, the boat will not rock too much. We are ready to move, a little, not a lot.

2. The Work in Progress Business

I believe Barack when he says he is a work in progress. I believe the Senates (in Illinois and DC) were too small for him and that he was almost destined to be the right person at the right time. But for WHAT?

Do not throw stones at me. I am just a messenger, someone who offers out of concern some hard truth. The hard truth is that the American people might be willing to settle for nominee. As in my first point, the majority might be willing to pat itself on the back for being tolerant and open-minded, but not really interested in drilling down and carrying this to a serious conclusion.

As I type these words, I really don’t believe they are fully persuasive. But they do give me pause. Barack IS a work in progress and what I see happening is a move toward becoming a WINNING Democratic nominee after a succession of LOSING nominees that go back decades. The lone exception, Bill Clinton, is an anomaly and also a fixture of the gridlock politics we have become used to.

3. Getting The Message Right

This is el kahuna grande, the brass ring, the main chance and it ain’t there yet. It ain’t there big time. It need not be there yet. We have two to four weeks to hone out of Barack’s fine and, on occasion, interesting and visionary proposals, a five or ten minute statement of just what Barack will do as President.

It is for this reason that my headline says: Barack needs Brian Schweitzer NOW. Sure I think Schweitzer should be on the short list for VP. But that will be TOO LATE.

I want Barack and Schweitzer to spend enough time together so that Schweitzer gains enough admiration for Barack that he can say what Barack is all about and why he should be President. If Schweitzer can do that Barack’s chances of winning become almost a lock.

Conversely, I want Barack in this process to become immersed in ways of relating to Brian — enough so that he can say what he is about in a way that Brian can own as OK.

I am talking about some serious mutual consciousness-raising.

Schweitzer was an outsider winner in Montana, a despiser of special interest money, a truly committed egalitarian when it came to education, and a do-as-I-do environmentalist. He irrigated a big swath of Saudi Arabia as an engineer. He has about an 80 percent popularity rating in RED Montana.

I predicted the Obama phenomenon before I ever heard of Barack. It goes back to Jacques Derridda’s statement that the only way beyond stasis that is terminal is something new.

That is bigger than being a New Democrat. Barack is a work in progress when he walks away from being locked into the homiletical model of the past — of Wright and Pfleger, when he espouses the concept of transcending ego enough to work with others communally, and when he wins the freaking Democratic nomination almost single-handedly against profound odds.

Now that work in progress needs to MORPH into a message that WINS. And it will happen with the help of Brian. I do not mean Monte Python’s Brian. Montana’s Brian.

I read this to my wife and it seems I may need to explain. She wonders why the points require Brian Schweitzer. It is because, more than anyone else I know, Brian Schweitzer can talk to and win the very people Barack has had difficulty talking to and winning. I have two pages already that explain my interest in Schweitzer.
