Twitter Tip: Paring Down Your Following List

Twitter Tip: Paring Down Your Following List

Tweepi is presently the only utility I use to manage my Twitter activity.  You can pare down the number of folk you follow according to multiple criteria. Reducing the number of people you follow is a choice, not a necessity. Eliminating persons you follow who do not follow you back is likewise a choice.

I value followers who retweet or reply to my tweets. I list these as Folk you should follow. I use these lists to find salient tweets to pass on. You can find these lists at

Twitter Tip: The Uses of Tweetdeck

Twitter Tip: The Uses of Tweetdeck

Among Twitter add-ons Tweetdeck is my “most used”.

With Tweetdeck you click the Tweet button top left and paste in or write your update. Paste the url (web address) below if there is one. Push the shorten button to the right and it pops up short at the end of your tweet. Press Enter and your Tweet is delivered.

Customize Tweetdeck using Tweetdeck Settings on the upper right. I no longer look at DMs so I make that column invisible. I have three columns. Friends, Replies and the TwitScoop Buzzing Right Now Tag Ckoud.

There is a versatile Tweetdeck Settings button way up on the right. I have checked only three general settings: “Show Notification window”. “Play notification sound”. And “open profiles in a Web page”.

I see something I want to Tweet and immediately I can update using Tweetdeck. Use it in coordination with your Twitter profile and home page.

Correct errors? Go to your Twitter profile page. Copy the erroneous update. Then delete it using the garbage link. Then go to the home page and paste in the erroneous text, correct it and hit update.

This does not delete the original except on your profile page. But the correct Tweet will show up around the Twitterverse.

Tweetdeck is fast. To catch errors you should go to your profile page. Also see that the short url opens the page properly.

Your Twitter profile bio should contain your most salient keywords. Mine includes Obama2012 because that is what I am mainly doing these days.

Note also that your Tweets will draw more than your immediate followers. If you tweet about particular subjects the words will be indexed by Twitter’s robust search apparatus and your tweets will show up accordingly. If you wish add a hashtag — eg: #apples or #oranges to your tweet provided the message is relevant and of some help to a reader. There is no need to repeat a word in your tweet with a hashtag.

Spotify is a great complement to Twitter. You can tweet what you are listening to with ease.

I get followers on the strength of my updates and (I assume) by the size of my list. I follow them back manually as they come. I also look at people’s lists and follow highly specific lists that relate to my tweets.

I try to mix tweets from my blog with retweets from my followers and retweets from significant news and other channels. Within reason, I  repost items that I feel are relevant, often by quoting salient bits of a post.

I now use Buffer to post many tweets and Hootsuite and Ping FM to widen my options for promotion and scheduling.

TweetEffect enables you to determine how many followers you gain or lose with a single Tweet.

Twitter is now almost a default global communications system because of the simplicity of its concept and the relative ease of its execution. Those who create a solid personal platform will now will be ahead of the curve.
