Snowden and Related Thoughts

Snowden did nothing different than John Lewis and others did – he saw a wrong more egregious than the law that protected it.

Snowden should be ranked with the known and unknown veterans of the Civil Rigts movement.

We celebrate Martin Luther King for exercising the same logic that Snowden used to defy an unjust law.

Nonviolence is always effective against an unjust law. It is ineffective when there is no law.

The rule of law is essential to a true democracy.

The rule of law is the most precious possession of any society.

When laws are unjust they must be changed.

There are no laws that cannot be improved.

Fairness is the standard on which any law can be judged.

The newspapers and sites that used Snowden’s work should stand with him now.

You cannot call a man a traitor and live on the product of his alleged disobedience without bearing the mark of the hypocrite.

Snowden should be an issue in 2014 and the winners should be for a full pardon.

Snowden should be pardoned irrespective of whether he returns to the United States.

The tragedy of President Obama would be finishing his presidency without correcting his transgressions of elementary human rights.

It is very hard to remain for President Obama and to forgive violations of rights and international law at the same time. But I am and I do.

To be an ethical pragmatist is the only option in today’s world.

The only absolute things are values that apply to all.

Values should be the basis of law.

Snowden is no different than any honest citizen should be – open to defy if defiance is the honorable course.

The notion that we are good because we are ethical is a stretch. We are all fallible, we all do harm, we are all forgiven.

The world censures and then forgets and then comes around.

We will not solve our climate problem by adjusting the width of streets.

We will not solve our climate problem by adjusting the width of streets. Incremental changes will not save our cities. Cities will be saved by designing car free areas of areas up to a mile square.  Cars and trucks will be relegated the periphery of future communities. Transportation within future communities will be mainly be by foot and bike. Vacant and wasteland areas can become new car free communities. Car free communities need have no stairs. Most future residences will be one level. Graded ways can easily enable transit between levels. A max of four levels is adequate to support a car free community of 5-10K.  Thinking outside the box is the only way forward. Car free communities will be forced on us by climate change. Even if climate was not a problem, car free communities would make complete sense.

Baseball is continuous. Society is not. Cyber will change all metrics once it gets past the infantile gadget stage.

The text below is a comment on the following:

Identifying the “Sabermetrics” of Urbanism | PlaceMakers http://buff.ly/1938esZ

Well now er um. As an old Doxiadis auditor, I am familiar with this thinking in a younger iteration. As a born and raised New Yorker, I know what a block is. But as one who has thought for a lifetime about cities and particularly about metrics, come to think of it, I believe this suffers from a failure to see the self-evident. What is self-evident but missed? The answer is: The imperative to separate oil and the automobile from its central control of everything else. Once make these things peripheral, and the scales will fall from our eyes. We will not lose these anymore than we lost horses, But they will no longer influence all else we do and think. My metric is drawn from my reading of Christopher Alexander coupled with my own evolution of his thinking. It arrives at the concept of the cyber-community which is 10,000 persons of all sorts living by choice in a community that is car free, no more than four levels high, stairless, lego-like and so on and so forth. I see it all. It does not exist. Neither did the car once. I outline it in my largely-ignored book, Triadic Philosophy.

Nothing is LESS free market than our military-industrial, oil-car-corporate, bank-on-dole economy

Nothing is LESS free market than our military-industrial, oil-car-corporate, bank-on-dole economy the GOP sucks up to.

I tweeted this following a long – for Twitter – discussion that typically pitted reason on the left against smoke from the right. It is time to start framing our rhetoric accurately. None of the freedom conservatives say they want is in today’s economy. Conservatives are defending the most government-centric society you can imagine. They simply want to cherry-pick who gets the gravy. If it’s military-industrial, oil-car corporate and bank-friendly, it gets a pass. That is where GOP pay comes from. If it is the result of this huge welfare capitalism, a mass of Americans reeling and on the hook to these very same forces, well, the devil take the hindmost. The last laugh will be administered by an impatient Deity who is stretching at the moment in preparation for another summer and fall of gorgeous weather that the media will describe as once in a century. We would not want to get Chevron’s nose out of joint now, would we? Oppose!
